Basescu wins the election in diaspora: 78.86%

Traian Basescu won the election in diaspora with 78,86 per cent, that is 115,831 votes of a total of 146,876 expressed valid votes, according to unofficial results.

Mircea Geoană obtained 21.14 per cent, representing 31,045 votes granted by the Romanians abroad.

The Romanians abroad voted for the election of the president until Monday morning at 7.00 a.m, Romania's hour. Until 07.00 a.m, Romania's hour at the 294 voting sections abroad, over 147,600 Romanians voted.

The Romanians voted abroad during 35 hours becauses of the time differences and the vote developed under normal circumstances.

In the Republic of Moldova, Traian Basescu was voted by no less than 94.8 percent of Romanian voters, while the PSD candidate, Mircea Geoana, only got 5.2%, according to Unimedia.md, quoting sources from the Romanian Foreign Ministry. A total of 12,300 people voted in Moldova until ballot stations were closed at 9 p.m. The most active were those in Chisinau – 8,100 voters, followed by Balti – 950 voters, Orhei – 900 voters, Cahul – 550 voters and so on. In the first round of elections on November 22, Basescu got the support of 90.7% of Romanian voters in the Republic of Moldova. He was followed by Crin Antonescu with 3.7 percent and Mircea Geoana with 3.5 percent.
