Basescu: Romania to accelerate citizenship process to Moldovans
Romania is going to accelerate the process of citizenship granting to Moldovans, Romanian President Traian Basescu stated.
Even though a range of European officials criticized the initiative of the Romanian head of state to offer aggregately the Romanian citizenship, especially to about a million of Moldovan citizens, Traian Basescu further insists on this decision.
Basescu claims the law on citizenship is going to coincide exactly with the German one which is within the European legal framework. Basescu also said that nobody seriously asked Romania give up the plans and that it will offer citizenship to all the Romanians abroad who lost it because of historical events.
The Romanian head of state said he wanted to reach a citizenship granting rate of about 1.000 a week till 2010, this needing a much bigger administrative apparatus, because currently only 50-75 cases can be solved a week.
Being asked if the measure serves as a reaction to the events which happened in Moldova on 7 April or whether it is just a technical matter the Romanian president said ‘it is an obvious political decision, by which the Moldovan youth is given a chance. This is why a free of charge access for Moldovan students is given for the universities in Romania’.
Basescu said he would not appoint a new ambassador to Chisinau, but would promote a diplomat within the Romanian Embassy to Moldova to the rank of charge d’affaire, after the candidacy of Mihnea Constantinescu had been rejected by the Moldovan officials.
