Austerity measures are harsh but efficient, statement

"Europe is going through the most difficult economic crisis since World War II. Over the last three years, Romania has had to take economic decisions in order to adapt to the current conditions. Some of the measures have been harsh but they have proven to be the right ones. These decisions will put the country back on the track of positive recovery." The statement belongs to Joseph Daul, the Chairman of the European People’s Party Group (EPP), commenting on the recent remarks of the Romanian opposition.

Speaking on behalf of EPP, he says that all politicians have a duty to listen to the discontent shown by the citizens and try to find the best solutions for the present.

Mr. Daul bemoaned the way the Romanian opposition uses the frustration of the people to discredit a policy that is positive for the whole nation. He emphasizes that such a situation could lead to significant losses on European markets.

"I call on the Romanian Opposition to be responsible. Their calls for sanctions from the European Institutions are not against the Government, but against the Romanian people. Let's not ruin what the Romanian people have built over the last 22 years," added the Chairman.

The Group of the European People's Party is the largest in the European Parliament summing 271 members. It gathers centre and centre-right pro-European political forces from the EU Member States.
