April 2009's protests brought Moldova closer to European Union
The leaders of the incumbent governing Alliance for European Integration believe the post-election protesting on April 7, 2009 "brought Moldova closer to the European Union and to international democratic values".
Today, the AEI authorities organized a commemoration rally in front of the parliament building, and Moldova's Acting President, Parliament Chairman Mihai Ghimpu expressed gratitude to the last year's protesters for the courage they had demonstrated to the world.
"Those young people were that very compass, which showed us the correct direction Moldova must follow. I regret the previous government refused to recognize the people's right to protest. Even if those young people halted a car or threw a stone, nobody had the right to use force against them. We condemn the pogroms of the presidential office and parliament building. However, those young people, those who were protesting, they must bear no responsibility for that", presumes the acting leader of the nation.
Prime Minister Vlad Filat stated that the day of April 7, 2009 "was favorable for Moldova's European perspective, and for Europe's becoming a friend and partner to Moldova".
"Soviet militiaman [MVD general] Vladimir Voronin has committed the greatest crime: he has divided the Moldovan population and the Moldovan youth into friends and foes, having forced them to fight against one another. We shall reform the Ministry of the Interior, the Information and Security Service, the prosecution system, the Parliament and the presidential administration so as to never repeat the mistakes of the past", promised the Premier.
First Deputy Speaker of the Moldovan Parliament, Chairman of the Moldova Noastra Alliance Serafim Urechean said that the police should have delivered the protesters to their homes, instead of beating them up, and that the former Communist government must one day stand responsibility for the violence it made.
Minister of Labor, Social Protection and Labor Valentina Buliga, who is a member of the Democratic Party Executive Council, assured the rally the authorities shall do everything to reveal "the organizers and provocateurs, who converted the youth's peaceful protesting into an act of violence".
