Angela Merkel arrives in Moldova today

German Chancellor Angela Merkel

Moldova welcomes today the German Chancellor Angela Merkel. The most powerful woman in Europe is expected to arrive in Chisinau around 2:30 PM local time.

The Moldovan authorities invested a lot of time and resources to make sure this high-level visit will take place accordingly. Although they did not say how much money was spent to prepare this large event, the costs are expected to be quite high.

This is the first visit of a German Chancellor to Moldova. The experts say that Ms. Merkel’s trip to the former Soviet republic is a matter of encouragement of the reforms developed by the Moldovan pro-Western Government established in 2009.

“She is the most influential European politician whose voice is listened to not only in Brussels but also in Moscow,” said Kalman Mizsei, former EU envoy to Moldova.

The political analysts believe that she can contribute to the Transnistrian conflict resolution, a separatist conflict lasting for twenty years now.

“Angela Merkel can do a lot to insist that the confidence building does not only mean a good relationship between Filat and Shevchuk [so-called president of Transnistria]; while this is an indispensable ingredient of success, this is just a beginning,” Mr. Mizsei continued.

The spokesperson of the German Government Steffen Seibert confirmed for Moldova.ORG that during her visit to Moldova, the Chancellor will help finding solutions for the settlement of the conflict in Transnistria.

Nicu Popescu, senior research fellow at the European Council on Foreign Relations said that Germany can help Moldova by keeping the Transnistrian issue on the agenda of EU-Russian Federation relations.

“Merkel's message in Moldova will be a signal of unprecedented support for the Moldovan government, the country's European integration and the reforms process, as well as attempts to solve the conflict in Transnistria.”

A very important point on Ms. Merkel’s agenda is the joint meeting with the businessmen of both Moldova and Germany. They will discuss about the current investment climate in Moldova and the prospective investments which might be brought to Moldova.

Before closing her visit to Moldova, Angela Merkel is expected to give a public speech.
