Acting president says Moldova "will never unite" with Romania
"Moldova will never unite with Romania," Moldovan acting President Mihai Ghimpu has said in a telephone link-up with readers of the Komsomolskaya Pravda v Moldove newspaper on Feb. 17.
"When we speak about the Romanian language one should not understand that Moldova will unite with Romania. This is pure bluff," said Ghimpu who is also the leader of the parliamentary Liberal Party.
"Moldova will never unite with Romania. During Romanian President Traian Basescu's recent visit to Chisinau it became clear that we will never be part of Romania. Moldova is an independent state. Today we should deal with economy and put an end to these speculations," Ghimpu said.
In an interview with the Russian radio station Ekho Moskvy last week, opposition Communist MP and ex-presidential adviser Mark Tkaciuk said that "by seeking to amend the constitution the ruling liberal-democratic coalition is pursuing the goal of joining Moldova to Romania". Similar opinions have been repeatedly expressed by representatives of other opposition parties.
